Jack has learned how to find a truffle-scented target buried underground. Truffles are mushrooms that have a distinct flavor and aroma; they are considered by many to be so irresistible that a single white truffle weighing just under two pounds recently sold for $50,000.

I made a target by placing a few drops of white truffle oil on a tiny scrap of fabric and placed it inside a small envelope (shown above). I started on the first day with the target in plain view - just some distance away from him. I held a similar target and offered him a sniff. He found it. On day two, I put the target under blankets; he found it. On day three, I buried the target outside under a loose covering of mulch. I disturbed several areas of mulch under the same tree. He found it. I buried it under about three inches of mulch. He found it. On day four, I buried it under two inches of soil, then three. He found it. On day five, under five inches of soil. No problem. On day six, he found the target under seven inches of soil.

Sniffing for the buried target.

He has found the target and begins to dig it out.

Jack is always excited when he finds the target.

The target was seven inches under the soil. Truffles are normally found four to six inches underground.
